Allan Morton Butchers of Distinction has traded from 54 Town Street since the mid 2000s, occupying one of the shop fronts that gives the top of Horsforth its 'village' character. It is a traditional counter butcher in the fullest sense: meat is cut, boned and prepared on the premises rather than arriving pre packed, and the display changes with what is good and what is in season. The emphasis is on British produce, with beef, lamb, pork and poultry sitting alongside cuts that most supermarkets long ago stopped bothering with, rabbit and game among them.

What regulars talk about is the counter itself. Ask what suits a slow braise, a Sunday roast or a barbecue and you will get a proper answer, along with the cut to match and the cooking time to go with it. The shop is happy to fill your own containers, takes orders ahead for larger joints and Christmas birds, and accepts the Horsforth Pound. It is open early, from seven in the morning through to late afternoon Monday to Saturday, which makes it a genuine alternative to the weekly supermarket shop rather than an occasional treat.
